Stunned by the scale of erosion and washing out
of agricultural land, the Government is giving a thought to chalking out
a special programme to revive these lands. Union Agriculture Minister
Sharad Pawar made a statement to this effect while interacting with
affected farmers during his ongoing tour.
After visiting several villages including Pendhri (Deoli), Kinhi
Dhanoli, Khapri (Gandhi), Kanholibara, and Takalghat. At Pendhri (Deoli)
in Hingna tehsil of Nagpur district; Umra, Gaul, Bhosa, Kandhli in
Wardha district; Kinhala (Kalamb), Mohda, Kopa Mandvi, Pimpalkhuti
(Pandharkawda) in Yavatmal district; Pawar visited the damaged farms and
also interacted with affected farmers. He saw the plight of farmers
first-hand and admitted before farmers that it was beyond their
resources to restore the eroded and washed out agricultural lands.
Pawar assured farmers that the Central Government in collaboration with
State Government, was mooting a special programme to revive eroded and
washed out farm lands. The Central Government would try to do everything
necessary to see that such lands were revived for agriculture by next
season. The revival or restoration of fertile soil was a very difficult
and highly expensive task. Hence, the Government was thinking over
chalking out a policy for removal of fertile silt in dams and
lakes/tanks and dumping of the same at eroded/washed out farm lands,
Pawar told farmers at Yavatmal on Sunday.
As per the assessment report of the administration, in Nagpur Division
itself, 12,232.70 hectares of farm land has been eroded severely while
1,413.56 hectares has been washed out. In Amravati Division also,
farmers are affected by this especially in Yavatmal, Amravati, and
Washim districts. Against this backdrop, these affected farmers are
eagerly waiting for the Union Agriculture Minister’s announcement to
transform into concrete policy decision soon.
