Vidarbha region in general and Nagpur in particular have been attracting attention of major investors from across the world. This time, Maharashtra Government made it a point to promote Nagpur at the high-profile World Economic Forum meet held at Davos (Switzerland). Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan held discussions with several multi-national companies (MNCs) regarding investment possibilities in the region.
Maharashtra Government delegation led by Chavan comprised Managing Director of CIDCO Sanjay Bhatia, Principal Secretary (Industries) Apurva Chandra, Chief Executive Officer of MIDC Bhushan Gagrani and others. The delegation held discussions with Zurich Airport; Cargill, largest privately held corporation in the US; SABMiller Plc, UK_based multi-national brewing and beverage company; Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO), and Swedish furniture major IKEA. Chief Minister discussed investment possibilities in airport at Nagpur in his meeting with Zurich Airport officials.
Chavan also held discussions with Cargill. According to sources, Cargill officials spoke of their plans to expand in soyabean processing in India. “Soon, they will be discussing their investment plans with Maharashtra Government in detail,” added a source. SABMiller, a USD 35 billion company, also evinced interest in agro-based brewing, particularly in barley. Chief Minister invited the company to ‘Krishi Vasant’ agricultural exposition being held in Nagpur from February 9 to 13. Sources added that the company ‘agreed to explore’ the possibilities of additional investments in Maharashtra with ‘special emphasis on Nagpur region’.

“We projected Nagpur region at the World Economic Forum meet and held discussions with various potential investors. We highlighted that land availability was very good in Butibori industrial area as well as MIHAN project,” Principal Secretary (Industries) Apurva Chandra told ‘The Hitavada’. Nagpur was recommended strongly for investment in textile, furniture and other segments. Referring to discussions with JETRO, he said that JETRO discussed the interests of Japanese companies in infrastucture sector including Nagpur airport. JETRO is into project finance only, he added.
Positive talks were held with IKEA. In August 2013, IKEA had identified four states including Maharashtra to set up its stores for extension to textiles, wood, metal, plastic, lighting, home furnishing stores etc. Apurva Chandra said that IKEA had been sourcing the materials from india for over 25 years. With Nagpur region’s potential regarding the materials, it may prove to be strategically good.
