Staff Reporter
The issue of ‘vast regional imbalance’ in selection of candidates for Government job,s pointed out by retired Chairman of Maharashtra Public Service Commission (MPSC) Sudhir Thakre had created quite a flutter. On Friday, a city-based activist Nitin Ronghe submitted a memorandum to Ch Vidyasagar Rao, Governor of Maharashtra, about injustice meted out to Vidarbha region on Government jobs and other counts.
Rather than addressing the issues of other backlog sectors, Ronghe stressed upon two main points -- regional imbalance in selection of candidates through MPSC, and diversion of Maharashtra Mineral Developmental Fund share meant for Vidarbha to other parts of Maharashtra. “I requested the Governor to get complete data of such amount diverted, and also to ensure that this amount is returned to Vidarbha in his next directives,” Ronghe told ‘The Hitavada’. According to him, the Governor expressed surprise about such diversion of funds and said that he would get information from the departments concerned. “The response of Governor about Vidarbha development was very positive, and I expect that he will initiate prompt action,” he added.

Ronghe, who is Secretary of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) city unit, stated in his memorandum submitted to the Governor that current pathetic situation of Vidarbha was a result of neglect by Maharashtra Government for over five decades. Quoting from the letter of former MPSC chief Sudhir Thakre, Ronghe pointed out regional imbalance in selection of candidates from Vidarbha in Government jobs. Stating that representation of Vidarbha in civil services selection was merely 9-12 per cent, and it should have been 23 per cent considering population of the region. He urged the Governor to provide solution under Constitutional framework so that Vidarbha and other backward regions got their due share in Government employment.
Pointing out diversion of Maharashtra Mineral Development Fund meant for Vidarbha to other regions, Ronghe urged the Governor to get information about wrongful diversion and direct the Government to return the funds such diverted to Vidarbha. Besides, Ronghe said, the Governor should ask the Government to furnish information on debt burden on the State with details of region-wise spending of the loan amount. He urged the Governor to get information on region-wise number of projects and proportion in which Maharashtra Government gave equity and loan guarantee to co-operative projects, and also figures regarding loan repayment by the Government.
