Nagpur, the Second Capital of Maharashtra, has always been at the forefront in responding to good initiatives. In a latest, around 5,000 consumers from Nagpur city have surrendered subsidy they availed on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders for domestic use.
Central Government offers subsidy on LPG cylinders for domestic use. Every cylinder for domestic use carries a subsidy of about Rs 200/-. This results into a huge annual subsidy burden on the Government. It also drains precious resources that otherwise could have been used in developmental activities. The Government has been of the view that subsidy on domestic LPG instead of being broad-based, needs to be focussed at truly needy. Keeping this in mind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently appealed to the citizens who could afford non-subsidised LPG cylinders to surrender subsidy.
Interestingly, Nagpur had responded positively to a novel initiative ‘Rashtra Nirman Mein Mera Yogdaan’ launched by Chhatra Jagruti on March 1 earlier this year. Adv Nishant Gandhi, Secretary of Chhatra Jagruti, told ‘The Hitavada’ that his organisation had appealed to financially well to do persons to surrender LPG subsidy so that Government could cut its subsidy bill and utilise the funds for other developmental works. “Till March 1, there were 1,000 persons who had responded to our appeal. So far, the number of persons who have signed the forms to surrender their LPG subsidy has gone up to around 5,000,” he said.
Ajay Sancheti, Rajya Sabha Member of BJP, is one of those persons who have surrendered LPG subsidy. “Yes, I have filled up the form. Besides, I have motivated some more persons in this regard. Financially well to do persons should surrender their LPG subsidy and contribute to the process of nation-building,” he said.
‘Opt Out of Subsidy’ scheme has been launched by the Government to motivate LPG users, who can afford to pay the market price for LPG, to voluntarily surrender their LPG subsidy. Naresh Vanjari, District Supply Officer, told ‘The Hitavada’ that some of the high-ranking officers also had discussed among themselves about the scheme. “Those interested should fill up Form-5, stating that they are not interested in availing of the LPG subsidy. The duly filled form should be submitted to respective gas agency,” he said. At present, each non-subsidised LPG cylinder costs Rs 701, and at subsidised rates it is available for Rs 465, Vanjari added.
