If everything works out well, Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited (MAPL) may be revived. Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister; Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways; and Hansraj Ahir, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, will pay a visit to MAPL on Friday.
Fadnavis, Gadkari, and Ahir will be in the city on Friday to attend a seminar on plastics and chemical industries in Vidarbha region at Centre Point, Ramdaspeth here from 9 AM to 2 PM.  Subhash Desai, Maharashtra Industries Minister; Chandrashekar Bawankule, Energy Minister ; Secretary, Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, Government of India; and other senior officers of the State and Central Governments, and representatives of plastics and chemicals industries of Vidarbha will also participate.
The aim of the seminar is to promote Vidarbha as an investment destination, highlight Government initiatives, connect local entrepreneurs and national players and create an interaction forum with the industry and attract start-up entrepreneurs in the sunrise sector, states an official release. In the seminar, main thrust will be on role of Central Institute of Plastic Engineering and Technology (CIPET) in galvanizing plastics industries, role of Government of India for promoting plastic and chemical industries, and expectation of Vidarbha for developing value added/engineering products in plastics and chemicals.
Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister; Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways; and Hansraj Ahir, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers will pay a visit to Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited and explore the possibilities of revival of the company.
K V Varkey, Managing Director, Hindustan Antibiotics Limited (HAL) of which MAPL is a subsidiary company, arrived in the city on Thursday. Varkey told ‘The Hitavada’ that Hansraj Ahir, Union Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers, put up the proposal for revival of MAPL in January 2015. Asked about details of the proposed revival plan, Varkey said that it could not be disclosed at this juncture. “The proposal will be discussed in tomorrow’s meeting with the ministers. Still, for revival of MAPL, there are several hurdles to be crossed including disposal of case in the High Court, issues concerning Board for Industrial and Financial Reconstruction etc,” he said.
It may be recalled that MAPL, located at MIDC Hingna area in Nagpur, is the subsidiary of HAL, which was the first public sector drug manufacturing company set up by Government of India with active co-operation of World Health Organisation and UNICEF. HAL set up two subsidiary companies -- MAPL and Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited -- with an objective of providing affordable drugs throughout the country.
MAPL was running well for several years but later it landed in trouble when the allegations of misuse of position by officers surfaced. There were allegations of private companies manufacturing drugs and using MAPL labels to mint profit, even the MAPL unit was sick and not into drug production. Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) had taken cognisance of the allegations and had conducted raids in 2003. FDA also ordered cancellation of all statutory licences of MAPL and the officers and ‘business partners’ faced prosecution for violation of Drugs Price Control Order.
