Things appear to be moving pretty fast now after years of neglect, as far as industrial development in Naxal-affected districts of Gadchiroli and Gondia in Vidarbha region is concerned. After a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis in Nagpur recently, now a high-level meeting is being held at Union Home Ministry on Thursday.
According to sources, the issues pertaining to Mining Lease (ML) granted, status of mineral-based industries in these two districts, status of applications received for ML, threat to industrial development due to Left Wing Extremism (LWE), roads and communications network development, etc will be discussed threadbare in the meeting. For years together, industrial development of Gadchiroli and Gondia districts had been kept on backburner as these are affected by Naxalite/Maoist threat. However, with change of guard at the State and the Centre and with keen interest shown by Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister, and Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, the process is gaining momentum.
“The emphasis this time is on generation of employment through industrial development. Good roads and communications network, and improved security environment will encourage industries to come to these two districts. And, this will result in integration of Gadchiroli and Gondia districts with mainstream of development,” said a source familiar with the development. According to the source, Divisional Commissioner of Nagpur and Collectors of Gadchiroli and Gondia districts have been asked to make presentations on these two districts. The presentations will be made before Rajnath Singh, Union Home Minister, in presence of Nitin Gadkari.
Another source told ‘The Hitavada’ that thought is being given to an idea of asking the existing and potential investors to create goodwill among local people through spending Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) fund on creation of public amenities in affected areas. Another idea that has been floated for discussion is that the State Government should set up a Security-related Development Fund to expedite development in Naxal-affected areas. However, these ideas are at a nascent stage, added the source.
As far as mineral-based industrial development in Gadchiroli and Gondia districts is concerned, these earned revenue of Rs 15.49 crore and Rs 14.99 crore respectively in the financial year 2014-15. Gadchiroli district has rich deposits of Iron Ore, Limestone, Quartz, with occurrences of Asbestos, Baryte, Copper, Corundum, Diamond, Fluorite, Graphite, Kyanite, Tungsten etc. Of these, Iron Ore deposits are estimated to be 178.610 MT and Limestone deposits are 172 MT. Comparatively, Gondia district has lesser quantity of Iron Ore (4.650 MT) and Quartz (3.050 MT).
