CCTV cameras to be installed at Govt offices

Chief Secretary asks officers of respective departments to complete the process of installation of CCTV cameras within a month

By Kartik Lokhande
After a long delay, finally, the State Government has decided to install closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras at Government offices across the State within a month. As no department was serious in implementing the previous orders in this regard, Chief Secretary Jayant Banthia has asked all to ensure that process of installing the cameras is completed within a month.
As per the instructions that reached the administration in the Orange City, CCTV cameras are to be installed in buildings housing offices of various departments including Home, State Excise, Transport, Public Health, Higher and Technical Education, School Education, Medical Education, Urban Development, Revenue, etc. CCTV cameras will be installed at the entrance to these buildings/offices, public service areas, outside the cabin of senior officers like Divisional Commissioner, District Collector, etc.
This time, the Government has asked departments concerned to meet the expenditure likely to be incurred on installation of CCTV cameras, from annual allocation. Besides, procurement of the cameras and required system has to be done locally. “Once the cameras are installed at vital Government offices, the next step would be to install the cameras at vantage points along important roads in various cities including Nagpur,” said a source, familiar with the developments in this regard.
According to the source, CCTV cameras will be installed at Government Medical College Hospitals, Civil Hospitals, and major Government nursing homes. “This is being done to ensure that footage of those assaulting doctors on duty is available for necessary action. Besides, the step will hopefully curb the incidences of stealing of newborns from hospitals,” added the official.

Barring Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Pune, and Pimpri-Chinchwad, CCTV cameras are yet to be installed in other major cities including Nagpur, which is the Second Capital of Maharashtra. Of course, some steps have been taken in certain pockets. In Aurangabad Division, for instance, steps have been taken to increase coverage of CCTV cameras up to tehsil level. In Naxal-affected Gadchiroli district, CCTV cameras have been installed at District Collectorate and Zilla Parishad. After Banthia’s instructions, administrative machinery in Nagpur Division has been asked to initiate steps for installation of CCTV cameras, and complete the process within a month.
