Monsoon is infamous for skipping dates. But, this time, it appears to have decided to earn reputation for being on time from Day One of its arrival in coastal areas down south of the country. Monsoon has arrived in southern parts of Vidarbha, on expected dates. It is likely to reach Nagpur on Monday.

According to Met Office here, the South-West Monsoon has further advanced into parts of Central Arabian Sea, Konkan, Marathwada, and Telangana; some parts of North Arabian Sea, southern parts of Saurashtra and Gujarat region; most parts of central Maharashtra; some parts of Vidarbha and some more parts of South Chhattisgarh. Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has predicted thunder squall at isolated places over Vidarbha till Monday.

A S Khan, Duty Officer at Nagpur Met Office, told ‘The Hitavada’ that Monsoon had arrived in Vidarbha on Saturday and Sunday. Western part of Vidarbha including Amravati and Yavatmal districts, and southern parts of Chandrapur and Gadchiroli districts were covered by Monsoon. “It is expected to reach Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, and Gondia districts on Monday,” he said.

As far as rainfall received on Sunday is concerned, Bhamragarh in Gadchiroli district received 5 mm; Samudrapur, Hinganghat, and Warora received 3 mm each; Chamorshi, Babhulgaon, Mangrulpir, Risod, Sindkhedraja, Lonar, Deulgaon Raja, Chikhali, Warud, Amravati received 2 mm each; Gadchiroli, Washim, Motala, Teosa received 1 mm each. Though rainfall received was quite low, arrival of Monsoon is the major development. Anticipating its arrival any time, farmers across the region had prepared their farms for Kharif season. With Monsoon picking up in days to come, agricultural activities also will gain momentum.

Asked about outlook for Monsoon this year, Khan said that 98 per cent was already forecast. “This year, advance of Monsoon has been the fastest in past 10 years. Since its onset at Kerala, it took almost one month to arrive in Vidarbha due to depressions in Bay of Bengal. However, this time, it has kept time,” he added.

According to the the climatic features of Nagpur for the month of June, the normal date for onset of monsoon is June 10. However, in the last decade, it was observed that the date of onset of monsoon has been varying from June 12 to June 26. The earliest arrival of Monsoon in Nagpur was reported on June 12 in the year 2008 while the latest was June 26 in 2009. If Monsoon arrives in the city on Monday, it will be the fastest arrival since 2003.
