Central team wants ‘accurate’ data on

damage caused by rain fury in Vid

* Asks State Government to follow SOP in disaster situations

The Central Government team, on Thursday, sought ‘accurate’ data from the administrative authorities in Vidarbha on damage caused by excessive and high-intensity rainfall in the region so that further procedure regarding aid could be initiated.
Headed by Joint Secretary of Union Home Department Gopal Reddy visited nine out of total 11 districts of Vidarbha region on Wednesday and Thursday. The team was divided into four sub-teams for visiting different districts. These teams visited Nagpur, Wardha, Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, Amravati, Akola, Yavatmal, and Washim districts. A sub-team headed by Reddy himself had visited rural areas of Nagpur district on Wednesday, and it visited different areas in Nagpur city on Thursday morning.
The sub-team headed by Gopal Reddy visited various spots including Canal Road in Dharampeth, Mankapur-Sadiqabad, localities along the banks of Chambhar Nala, Kamptee Road, Nari village etc and saw damage caused to roads, bridges, and nullah wall during high-intensity rainfall this monsoon. At many places, residents informed Reddy about inundation of slums and localities in low-lying areas. Reddy was accompanied by Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation) Milind Mhaiskar.
Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane informed the Central team about damage to infrastructure and sought aid. Already, he had sent a proposal to Central Government through State Government seeking aid for reconstruction and repair of urban infrastructure in the city.

Chairman of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) Pravin Darade, District Collector Saurabh Rao, NIT Superintending Engineer Sunil Gujjalwar, NMC’s Development Engineer Rahul Warke, Executive Engineer Manoj Talewar, NIT Executive Engineer Sonwane, Assistant Commissioners Ashok Patil and Prakash Warhade and a host of other officers accompanied Reddy. Corporators Dr Prashant Chopda and Sheela Mohod, former corporators Manoj Sangole, Kushal Hedau, Heera Gedam, Milind Sontakke, Milind Chaure, Rajesh Lade also appeared before the Central team during its visit to various areas, and apprised about damage caused by excessive rainfall.
The Central team concluded its two-day whirlwind tour of various areas of Vidarbha region affected by rain fury with a meeting held at Divisional Commissionerate here, later in the day. Central team members namely Gopal Reddy, S M Kolhatkar, Pradeep Indulkar, Om Prakash, Rama Varma, G S Rao, Abhijit Kumar, A Chandrashekhar attended the meeting and reviewed aid given by State Government so far and damage caused in the region.
In the meeting, Agriculture Commissioner Dr D G Bakwad made a presentation on loss caused to agriculture in the State this monsoon. According to him, Vidarbha region had seen damage to paddy, jowar, cotton, and soyabean crops. Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation) Milind Mhaiskar informed the visiting team about loss of lives, loss of property, and the relief offered by State Government. Gopal Reddy asked the State Government to follow Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in disaster situation and also to update the same regularly.
Divisional Commissioner B Venugopal Reddy, Secretary (PWD) S K Mukherjee, Municipal Commissioner Shyam Wardhane, NIT Chairman Pravin Darade and others also were present in the meeting. The District Collectors of Gondia, Chandrapur, Bhandara, and Nagpur made presentations on loss caused and relief measures taken by the Government in respective districts. S M Kolhatkar informed the Central team that high-intensity rainfall had destroyed horticulture crops also. Gondia Collector Dr Amit Saini pointed out that excessive rainfall had adversely affected fishery in Bhandara, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Gadchiroli districts.
