For past couple of days, rather a week, Nagpurians were feeling it. Wrapped in woolens, gathered around small bonfires, sipping hot tea or soup, enjoying hot pakoras, Nagpurians had realised that they were in for the bone-chilling winter. On Monday, Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) confirmed this officially.

Monday morning was the coldest ever in the history of Nagpur, in the month of December, with minimum temperature dipping to 5 degrees Celsius. With this, winter chill in Nagpur broke all the records. Previously, the lowest minimum temperature of 5.5 degrees Celsius was recorded on December 29, 1968. Nagpur also retained the distinction of being the coldest place in Vidarbha region for the second consecutive day.

The mean minimum temperature in December is 12.5 degrees Celsius. Compared to this, the minimum temperature on Monday morning was 7.5 degrees below normal. Obviously, this left Nagpurians shivering. They will have to bear with the severest winter chill for more days. The severe cold wave, which has gripped the region and especially Nagpur for past few days, is likely to continue for some more days to come. For next 48 hours, the minimum temperature is likely to be around 6 or 7 degrees Celsius. Besides, RMC has predicted dense fog at isolated places in Central India.

RMC-Nagpur confirmed on Monday that ‘severe cold wave conditions’ prevailed at isolated places over Vidarbha and east Madhya Pradesh. Technically, the well-marked low pressure area over south-west Bay of Bengal off Sri Lanka coast lay over south-west Bay of Bengal off north Sri Lanka , Tamil Nadu coast. Associated upper air cyclonic circulation extending up to mid-tropospheric level persisted, and dry air continued to prevail over Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha, and Chhattisgarh.

As far as minimum temperature at prominent locations across Vidarbha region is concerned, it was as follows: Nagpur – 5 degrees Celsius; Akola – 7.1 degrees Celsius, Amravati—10.2 degrees Celsius, Buldhana—9.4 degrees Celsius, Brahmapuri—9.2 degrees Celsius, Wardha—7.4 degrees Celsius, Yavatmal—7.8 degrees Celsius, and Washim—12.6 degrees Celsius.
