* Seeks special session of State Legislature in January to discuss Kelkar panel report
Staff Reporter
The
main Opposition parties -- Congress and Nationalist Congress Party
(NCP) -- that were divided throughout winter session of State
Legislature, came together on the last day of the session. After coming
together, both the parties flayed BJP-Sena Government in State for being
‘insensitive’ to farmers issues and said that the winter session had
been a ‘big disappointment’.
Both the Opposition parties blamed the
new Government for tabling Kelkar Committee report towards the end of
the session, and demanded a special session of State Legislature in
January to discuss the contents of the report. However, asked why the
Congress-NCP Government failed in tabling the report since October 2013,
Leader of Opposition (Assembly) Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil said, “Because
of various reasons, it could not be tabled, but the new Government
should have tabled it at the beginning of winter session.”
Addressing
a press conference after the winter session was prorogued on Wednesday,
Vikhe Patil and Leader of Opposition (Council) Dhananjay Munde said
that the Government had failed in meeting the expectations of farmers
and people. “The relief package announced by the Government is
inadequate and offers no immediate help to farmers. No procurement
centres have been started in the State, and those heading the Government
now are not talking about fulfilling their own demand of Rs 6,000 per
quintal price to cotton,” said Vikhe Patil.
On passage of the Bill
on reservation to Maratha community, Vikhe Patil alleged that the
Government had not made any amendment to the Bill. “There is absolutely
no commitment from the Government on reservation to Muslims,” he
alleged. Munde said that the Government should have either extended the
period in which ordinance on Muslim reservation would be in effect, or
should have tabled a separate Bill. He also flayed the Government for
not making clear its stand on Local Body Tax (LBT) and aspirations of
Vidarbha.
A day ago, former Chief Minister and senior Congress
leader Narayan Rane had flayed that the Opposition parties had failed in
cornering the Government. He had also alleged that the Opposition
parties were not aggressive as they were afraid of various enquiries
pending against them. Asked about this, Vikhe Patil said that he was not
in agreement with Rane’s comments. “The Opposition parties did quite
well,” he said. President of Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee
(MPCC) Manikrao Thakre said that he would talk to Rane and remove
‘misunderstandings’.
Deputy Leader of Congress (Assembly) Vijay
Wadettiwar, Bhai Jagtap, Abdul Sattar, Hemant Takle, Sanjay Dutt and
others also were present in the press conference.
