Maharashtra Govt to procure ‘stones’ worth Rs 2.36 crore!

* These ‘traverse stones’ are to be used during the special land measurement drive in the State
* Maximum 33,602 stones are to be procured in Nagpur Division

This may surprise many, but Maharashtra Government is procuring 62,506 ‘stones’ at the cost of Rs 2,36,13,040. Thus, the Government will be shelling Rs 377.77 per stone.
The reason? These ‘traverse stones’ are being procured for use in special land measurement drive to be conducted throughout the State. On July 23, Revenue and Forest Department has cleared the proposal of Settlement Commissioner and Director of Land Records, in this regard.
The ‘traverse stone’ is an important part of land measurement under Sections 122 and 126 of Maharashtra Land Revenue Code. To ensure accuracy in measurement of land, ‘traverse stone’, plane table, electronics total stations etc are used. The need was felt as the Government is conducting a special land measurement drive in villages.
Revenue Department is undertaking the special drive as per the directions of Upa-Lokayukta. In his order, Upa-Lokayukta has directed the Government to implement land measurement in all villages. Accordingly, the drive is being conducted in one village with population of 2,000 in each tehsil of the State. As the Gram Panchayats did not have ‘enough’ funds, Department of Land Records sent a proposal to the Government to make necessary allocation for procurement of ‘traverse stones’.
“The work of city survey is conducted in various stages including selection of site, inclusion in survey, preparation of map and frame-work, measurement on plane table, enquiry and creation of record, and then issuance of property card to land-holder. Traverse stone is useful in ensuring accuracy in various processes including angle-reading, detailed survey, preparing data sheets etc,” said Abhay Joshi, officiating Deputy Director (Land Records), Nagpur Division.
As per the information, the highest number of traverse stones -- 33,602 -- are being procured in Nagpur Division. It is followed by Mumbai (11,500), Aurangabad, Pune, Nashik, and Amravati divisions. Vidya Waghmare, Desk Officer, Maharashtra Government, issued the order in this regard.
