* Such raise in number of seats to be effective for academic session of
2014-15 only, and the Government will not grant any aid for such
additional seats

Taking cognisance of the widespread demand,
Higher and Technical Education Department has allowed the
non-agricultural universities in Maharashtra to increase number of seats
‘as per requirement’ so that all the students who have passed HSC
examination are accommodated in colleges for higher education.
While allowing the varsities to increase seats, Higher and Technical
Education Department has stated that this raise will be effective for
the academic session of 2014-15 only. Besides, the department has made
it clear that the Government will not grant any aid for such additional
seats. N B Marale, Deputy Secretary, Higher and Technical Education
Department, issued a letter in this regard to all the Vice-Chancellors
of non-agricultural universities in the State, on Thursday.
With the improvement in the result of Higher Secondary School
Certificate (HSC) examination, the number of students passing out also
increased. Soon after, barring the courses for which entrance
examinations are conducted, people’s representatives from across the
State had expressed apprehensions that these many students might not get accommodated into colleges as number of seats available were not
adequate. Responding to this, on June 25, Higher and Technical Education
Department had asked the universities to increase admission capacity
for sections of various courses up to a maximum of 10 per cent.
Still, on July 1, various people’s representatives met with Higher and
Technical Education Minister and pointed out that there were many
colleges, which had received applications more than the additional 10
per cent seats. Taking cognisance of this, Higher and Technical
Education Department has allowed the universities to increase number of
seats ‘as per requirement’ (even beyond additional 10 per cent). While
doing so, the universities have been asked to take appropriate decision
in accordance with the provision under Section 83 (3) (c) of Maharashtra
Universities Act.
Section 83 of the Maharashtra Universities Act of 1994 relates to
procedure for affiliation. Under the sub-section 3 (c) of this Section,
the Academic Council of university is empowered to take a decision on
various issues including ‘subjects, courses of study, the number of
students to be admitted.’
