Assembly polls: BJP makes deep inroads in distt over the years

By Kartik Lokhande

While the campaign for Legislative Assembly elections this time is yet to get hectic, the data of past Assembly elections shows that among all the parties Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made deep inroads in Nagpur city and district over the years.
With BJP and its long-term ally Shiv Sena parting ways, and Congress and its ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) also contesting independently, each of these major parties are testing their organisational strength in this Assembly elections in Nagpur city and district. Among these four major parties, BJP appears to be the strongest if one considers the official data of elections held in past 20 years.
As far as Nagpur city is concerned, the best performance it delivered since 1995 was in the year 2004 when it won four out of total five seats. Then, BJP could register its lone victory in Devendra Fadnavis from West Nagpur constituency. In 2009, after increase in number of constituencies from five to six post-delimitation, the situation changed drastically. In 2009 election, BJP not only avenged its defeat in 2004 but also snatched one more seat from Congress in East Nagpur, where BJP’s Krishna Khopde proved to be a giant killer by defeating Congress’ stalwart Satish Chaturvedi.
As far as Nagpur district (rural areas) is concerned, it has had six constituencies. Congress could not increase its tally beyond one while BJP has steadily increased its tally from one in 1999 to three in 2009. Of course, NCP maintained a tally of two in 1999 and 2004, but its bigwig Rameshchandra Bang lost to BJP’s new face Vijay Ghodmare in a keen contest in 2009 from Hingna constituency. Just like Congress, Shiv Sena also could not grow beyond Ramtek constituency.
It remains to be seen as to which party benefits the most in elections this time as all major parties are contesting separately.
