A day after political divorces between Congress-NCP and BJP-Shiv Sena rocked the State, aspirants and rebels started searching for new bonds. Dr Sunil Deshmukh, who was a Congress heavyweight but was denied ticket in Assembly elections held in 2009, had formed separate outfit Jan Vikas Congress. Deshmukh was denied ticket by Congress to field the then President of India Pratibha Patil’s son Raosaheb Shekhawat. Incidentally, Shekhawat contested from Amravati constituency and got elected as MLA. This led to further political isolation of Deshmukh in Amravati, though he still held quite an influence over supporters.
Similarly, Dr Anil Bonde was an influential leader of Shiv Sena from Morshi area. However, as the seat went to BJP in seat-sharing formula, Bonde rebelled. He contested as an Independent and won, while BJP candidate Sahebrao Tatte finished fifth in the votes tally. Since then, Bonde has been advocating statehood to Vidarbha and active in non-Shiv Sena circles.
Deshmukh and Bonde, along with their supporters, joined BJP on Friday at the residence of Nitin Gadkari here. Their supporters include Ashok Dongre, former Mayor; sitting corporators of Amravati, members of Zilla Parishad and Panchayat Samiti. Addressing the gathering, Gadkari said that Deshmukh and Bonde would strengthen the party in Amravati. Both the leaders will be filing their nomination papers on Saturday from Amravati and Morshi constituencies.
