The
victory of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state chief Devendra Fadnavis
from South-West Nagpur constituency was a foregone conclusion. The only
matter was the lead he secured. On Sunday, Fadnavis proved that he was
the most bankable star of BJP, by securing a lead of 58,942 votes over
his rival Congress candidate Prafulla Gudadhe-Patil. This was the
highest margin of victory in all 12 constituencies of Nagpur district.
Fadnavis,
who secured lead over Gudadhe right from the first round, polled a
total 1,13,918 votes while Gudadhe polled only 54,976 votes, which was
less than half of the votes polled by BJP leader. Of total 17 rounds of
counting of votes at Kurvey’s New Model School in Shraddhanand Peth
area, Gudadhe scored a lead over Fadnavis in ninth round only. That
lead, too, was of 1,822 votes. Of a total 1,92,639 valid votes, Fadnavis
alone polled 59.13 per cent votes.
Shiv Sena candidate Panju
Totwani and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) candidate Dilip Pankule
lost their deposit. Totwani polled merely 2,767 votes while Pankule
polled a paltry 1,055 votes. Compared to these two, Bahujan Samaj Party
(BSP) candidate Dr Rajendra Padole fared quite well. Dr Padole polled
16,540 votes. Still, as he could not secure 1/6th of total valid votes
polled, he lost his deposit.
As many as 1,014 voters pressed the
button of ‘None of The Above’ (NOTA). As far as postal ballot is
concerned, 790 valid votes were polled and 239 were rejected as invalid.
The total number of valid votes comprises 14 tendered votes also.
Though
the result was announced officially around 2 pm, Fadnavis came to
receive the certificate from Returning Officer (South-West) Dilip
Sawarkar around 4.30 pm. Fadnavis was in Mumbai since morning and when
he arrived in the city, he got a rousing welcome from party workers and
admirers. At various locations from the airport to counting centre, he
was greeted by people.
Devendra Fadnavis was accompanied by his wife
Amruta, MLC Anil Sole, Mayor Pravin Datke, Sandip Joshi, Munna Yadav,
Vijay Raut and others. With them, Fadnavis travelled throughout the city
in an open jeep accepting the bouquets, garlands, and greetings offered
by people. After receiving the certificate of his victory, Fadnavis
visited Deekshabhoomi and later went to his residence.
