Union Minister for Surface Transport Nitin Gadkari, on Saturday morning, met Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Dr Mohan Bhagwat. However, Gadkari later told mediapersons that there was no discussion on Maharashtra political situation between him and Bhagwat.
Importance was attached to Gadkari’s meeting with Bhagwat on Saturday morning. Gadkari rode to RSS Building in Mahal on his two-wheeler. After meeting Bhagwat, Gadkari talked to media briefly. He said that he had met RSS Sarsanghchalak, as had been his practice for 25 years. “I visit Sangh Building and meet Sarsanghchalak on the occasion of Dussera and Diwali every year,” he said.
Replying to a question, Gadkari said that he did discuss certain ‘important’ issues with RSS chief but quickly added that there was no discussion on political situation in Maharashtra. “There was no discussion on the issue you have been playing up, and also not on Chief Ministership of Maharashtra,” he told mediapersons.

Gadkari’s meeting with RSS chief came a day ahead of the high-tea being hosted by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi on Sunday for Members of Parliament of BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Interestingly, on Friday night, when RSS Sarsanghchalak Dr Mohan Bhagwat returned from Lucknow, Fadnavis met him and discussed the situation in Maharashtra.
BJP is in the process of forming the next Government in Maharashtra. There is discussion about Chief Ministerial candidate and BJP state chief Devendra Fadnavis is front-runner for the post. However, after declaration of Assembly elections, 36 of newly elected BJP MLAs from Vidarbha requested Gadkari to become Chief Minister of Maharashtra. Reports in a section of media viewed this development as rift between Gadkari and Fadnavis, who was fondly referred to as ‘gift of Nagpur to Maharashtra’ by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Three of the MLAs even offered to resign to pave way for Gadkari getting elected to Assembly.
However, on Laxmi Pujan day, Fadnavis met Gadkari at the latter’s residence. Later in the day, Gadkari and Fadnavis shared some lighter moments during Laxmi Pujan ceremony in BJP office. Gadkari also made it clear that he was happy working as Union Minister in the Centre, and had no plans of coming back to Maharashtra politics. This sent the message that Fadnavis was near-certain to become Chief Minister of Maharashtra.
