In the post-poll analysis of debacle of Congress in Nagpur city and Ramtek constituencies of Lok Sabha, the leaders from the city and district blamed various factors including imposition of Local Body Tax (LBT), inaction of State Government, and non-cooperation of ally Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).
Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan and Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) chief Manikrao Thakre have been conducting constituency-wise meetings to arrive at the reasons for the party’s poor show in recently held Lok Sabha elections. On Friday, assessment meeting for Nagpur city and Ramtek constituencies was held in Mumbai. Selected leaders including Congress candidates Mukul Wasnik (candidate from Ramtek) and Vilas Muttemwar (candidate from Nagpur) were invited for the meeting.
EGS Minister Dr Nitin Raut, Minister of State for Finance Rajendra Mulak, Former Minister Satish Chaturvedi, MLA Dinanath Padole, City Congress Committee (Nagpur) chief Vikas Thakre, District Congress Committee chief Sunita Gawande, Women’s Congress office-bearer Abha Pande, corporator Prashant Dhawad, Chandrapal Chauksey, Deepak Katole, Hukumchand Amdhare, Baburao Tidke and others attended the meeting.
Abha Pande said that imposition of LBT had angered the traders and businessmen and went against Congress candidate in Nagpur. She demanded that LBT should be scrapped, keeping in view Legislative Assembly elections to be held shortly.
Vikas Thakre expressed displeasure over State Government’s inaction on various issues pointed out by Congress workers from time-to-time about Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), where Bharatiya Janata Party-led Nagpur Vikas Aghadi is in power. “Congress-led State Government did not take any action on complaints of Congress against irregularities in NMC, as it our party was supporting BJP,” he said in the meeting. Besides, he blamed late announcement of seven-term MP Vilas Muttemwar’s name as Congress candidate from Nagpur constituency. Thakre demanded that party leadership should declare candidates for ensuing Legislative Assembly elections, well in advance to give time to party organisation to strengthen the network.
Some of the Congress office-bearers present in the meeting, alleged that Congress had to pay for inaction of Guardian Minister of Nagpur district Shivajirao Moghe. They accused him of not paying enough attention to resolution of developmental issues pertaining to the city and district. Most of those present accused the ally NCP of not extending due support and co-operation to Congress candidates.
Muttemwar and Wasnik adopted a different stand and appealed to the workers present in the meeting to forget the differences and start preparing for Legislative Assembly elections ahead. Both stressed on the need to correct the mistakes made during Lok Sabha polls. Chief Minister and MPCC chief also spoke on this occasion.

Will reach out to various
communities: MPCC chief
Talking to ‘The Hitavada’ after the meeting, MPCC President Manikrao Thakre said that Congress office-bearers and workers expressed their anguish over pending works. They also complained about various schemes not being implemented properly.
“Based on their inputs, now various schemes will be simplified for effective implementation and to ensure that benefits reached to people at large. Besides, if required, parameters also will be changed. Further, we will reach out to various communities,” said Thakre. Regarding LBT, Manikrao Thakre said that everyone spoke about it and MPCC also had conveyed the sentiments against LBT to the Chief Minister. “We are expecting a decision soon,” he added.
The meeting of Nagpur city and district marked the last round of the exercise of post-poll review of Congress in Maharashtra. In this round, Congress leadership took review of seats that it had won previously but lost. In next few days, MPCC will start review of constituencies that were not with Congress, but where the party needs to strengthen the base, added the MPCC chief.
