436 shun the path of Naxalism in nine years

Since its inception in the year 2005, as many as 436 Naxalites including 30 couples have shun the path of Naxalism in affected districts of Gadchiroli, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal. This has resulted in decline in the Naxalite/Maoist cadres over the years.
The Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme for Naxalites has recently got approval of the Home Department, after a delay of nine months since the office of Director General of Police sending the proposal. Under implementation since 2005, the scheme has got several extensions so far. A few days ago, it got another extension. This time, the extension is granted till August 2015.
Under the scheme, a total of 436 Naxalites have surrendered in the affected districts of Gadchiroli, Gondia, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal. Of course, maximum 420 surrenders are in Gadchiroli district. As per the official data, these 420 surrendered Naxalites include one State Zonal Committee member, five Divisional Committee members, 13 Commanders, 17 Deputy Commanders, 166 Dalam members, 101 members of Area Raksha Dal (ARD) and Gram Raksha Dal (GRD), and 117 Sangham members.
Under the scheme, Sangham member gets Rs 5,000; Divisional Commander, Dalam member, and those holding higher ranks get Rs 4 lakh to Rs 10 lakh assistance after surrender.
According to Anti-Naxalite Operations (ANO) office, the surrendered Naxalites are being provided with land or house and financial aid. Of 420 surrendered Naxalites, proposals for rehabilitation have been prepared in 367 cases. Of these also, 170 have got clearance and remaining are in the process of approval. The rehabilitation proposals include land for constructing house, house, financial aid for self-employment initiative, bank finance for agriculture, diesel engine etc.
So far, State Government has extended an aid of Rs 2,72,80,305 to surrendered Naxalites. In addition, an amount of Rs 42,50,000 has been spent from Security Related Expenditure (SRE) scheme of Central Government. Fifteen of the surrendered Naxalites have got trained from Government and private Industrial Training Institute (ITI) and have got driver’s licences also. They are earning livelihood with the driving skill. Others also got training from ITI and became skilled workers. Some are self-employed while some have got jobs in different private firms, with their skills. Some of the surrendered Naxalites are also working as Special Police Officers or on daily wages in Police Department.
Since inception, total 30 couples have surrendered under the scheme. They had taken to the path of Naxalism but were dejected by hardships, exploitation, and violence. Maximum 11 of these couples surrendered in the year 2013. The Naxalites who surrendered under the scheme also surrendered 82 rifles, 110 cartridges, one hand-grenade and ammunition. Those surrendering with weapons get additional financial assistance under the scheme.
