The ambitious Metro Rail project for the city has moved a step forward with Nagpur Metro Rail Company Limited (NMRCL) getting registered under Companies Act. Now, the Board of Directors of the company will meet soon and discuss roadmap for the project.
Maharashtra Government had applied for registration of NMRCL to Registrar of Companies in Mumbai. Already, Central and State Governments had given their nod to register the company for expediting Metro Rail project work in Nagpur. However, due to some technical snag on part of Registrar of Companies, NMRCL’s registration got delayed a bit. As a result, officials of Nagpur Improvement Trust (NIT) had to waste their time in vain at the office of Registrar of Companies for a few days.

For want of the registration, NMRCL could not hold the first meeting of its Board of Directors. Shyam Wardhane, NIT Chairman, confirmed to ‘The Hitavada’ on Saturday that NMRCL had got registration under Companies Act. “We submitted the requisite details including the names of Directors of the company, and also paid registration fees of Rs 3 crore. Now, the company’s Board of Directors will meet soon, and the project will move forward,” he said.
Once the Board of Directors of NMRCL meets, the company will start its full-fledged functioning. Among the immediate tasks are appointment of consultant to design the Metro Rail stretch from Airport to Khapri.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had performed bhoomipujan of the ambitious project in a glittering ceremony held in the city in August 2014. Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) has proposed two corridors of 38.125 kms for the project -- North-South and East-West -- from two different locations. The rail will be on 1.2 metre width of median of the road. The total cost of the project is Rs 10,550 crore. Central and State Governments will share 50:50 per cent equity while Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and NIT will raise funds for the project by selling additional FSI along Metro Rail route.
Brijesh Dixit is the Managing Director of NMRCL. Shankar Aggrawal, Secretary of Union Urban Development Department, has been appointed as Chairman of the committee. The Board of Directors of NMRCL comprises Mukund Kumar Sinha, Jhanja Tripathy, Ved Mani Tiwari, Shailendra Singh (appointed by Central Government); Subodh Kumar, Secretary, Finance Department; Dr Nitin Kareer, Principal Secretary of Urban Development Department, Maharashtra; Shravan Hardikar, Municipal Commissioner, and Shyam Wardhane, NIT Chairman, (appointed by State Government).
Recently, Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC) also handed over 37 hectares of land to NIT for Metro Rail project. MADC transferred the land for 4.5 kms long ‘at grade’ (elevated) railway line of Metro Rail in MIHAN-SEZ area.
Further, in a meeting held recently, NIT Chairman had asked other Government agencies to mark their utilities coming in the way of Metro Rail alignment. NMC, BSNL, and other Government agencies will have to submit information regarding their utilities, so that NIT can plan shifting of these utilities from the alignment route.
