‘Good Days’ appear to be here for Nagpur district and Nagpur Division. The latest Economic Survey released by Government of Maharashtra on Tuesday reveals that Nagpur is district in particular and Nagpur Division in general are moving at a fast pace as far as Net District Domestic Product (NDDP) is concerned.
Nagpur district, which was sixth in per capita NDDP/district income in 2012-13, has moved a place up in 2013-14. The per capita NDDP/district income of Nagpur district improved from Rs 1,12,047 in 2012-13 to Rs 1,23,610 in 2013-14. It has pushed down Kolhapur district to sixth place. More interestingly, compared to per capita national income of Rs 80,388, Nagpur’s NDDP is higher by a whopping Rs 43,222! It is higher than even the State’s average NDDP of Rs 1,17,091. The observations in the Economic Survey in this regard are significant as they hint at the growth in economic activity in a particular district/region.
District Income is one of the most important barometers to measure economic growth. District income estimate is one of the three indicators to construct a composite Human Development Index (HDI). As had been stated by the Government of Maharashtra in previous editions of Economic Survey, Gross State Domestic Product (GDP) is a measure in monetary terms, of all goods and services produced (without duplication) within the boundaries of any geographical area during one year. By subtracting consumption of fixed capital from respective GSDP, one can derive NDDP. Per capita district income is obtained by dividing NDDP by mid-year population of respective district.
Against this backdrop, the growth in NDDP/district income of Nagpur district assumes greater significance. Already, Vidarbha region as a whole was attracting foreign investors. With the change of guard in State Government leadership, Devendra Fadnavis from Vidarbha became Chief Minister last year. Being the first Chief Minister from Nagpur, he has been concentrating on expediting the development projects in Nagpur city and district.
The development in Vidarbha region as a whole is on fast track with Sudhir Mungantiwar from Chandrapur holding Finance-Planning and Forest portfolios, Chandrashekhar Bawankule (Nagpur) being Energy Minister. Besides, Rajkumar Badole from Gondia is Social Justice Minister. Dr Ranjit Patil (Akola) is Minister of State for Home and Urban Development; Pravin Potey Patil (Amravati) is Minister of State for Industries, Mining, Public Works; Sanjay Rathod is Minister of State for Revenue; and Ambarishrao Atram is Minister of State for Tribal Development.
With these many important portfolios, confidence of investors in Vidarbha region has been renewed. As a result, several delegations of France, US, UK and other countries paid a visit to Nagpur and Vidarbha in the recent past. Chief Minister’s keen interest in take-off of long-pending ambitious project of Multimodal International Hub and Airport at Nagpur (MIHAN), Metro Region Development in areas around Nagpur city, Metro Rail project in Nagpur, and several other important projects in other parts of Vidarbha, also have helped boost economic activity in the region.
There is a marked improvement in economic indicators for all districts of Vidarbha region. As per the Economic Survey, the State average NDDP is Rs 1,17,091. If division-wise data is to be considered, Konkan (including Mumbai) and Pune Divisions are the only ‘lakhpati’ ones with NDDP at Rs 1,70,587 and Rs 1,27,856 respectively. Compared to these, Nagpur Division’s growth is tremendous. It has inched closer to becoming the third ‘lakhpati’ division in the State, with NDDP in 2013-14 at Rs 96,715.
With more investments coming the way of Nagpur and Vidarbha in near future, per capita district income is set to register further increase. At the same time, it will be necessary for planners to prepare a roadmap for percolation of wealth created in region within the region so as to lay a stronger foundation of growth.
