A few days after the Naxalites killed seven C-60 commandoes and left two injured in Chamorshi tehsil of Gadchiroli district, Maharashtra Government has cleared hike in monthly ‘commando allowance’.
The proposal was pending with the Home Department. C-60 is the main fighting force that has successfully reined in the Naxalites in Gadchiroli and other Naxal-infested districts. It is known for highly trained tribal personnel, who are familiar with the terrain. It is also known for fearless patrolling in the deep forests in day as well as night, in search of the Left Wing Extremists. C-60 squad has carried out many successful operations in which several Naxalites were killed or nabbed.
The Government had approved of Rs 1,500 per month special allowance to commandoes in C-60 squad on October 18, 2006. The allowance was made applicable since September 1, 2006. Considering its impressive track record, hike was proposed for C-60 commandoes. The office of Director General of Police had forwarded a proposal to this effect on February 8, 2013. Sadly, Home Department authorities did not have enough of time to spare and clear the proposal. More unfortunately, it took sacrifice of seven C-60 commandoes on Sunday earlier this week, for the Government and Home Department to wake up and find out the proposal from cold storage.
Finally, on May 14, the Home Department cleared the proposal and raised the allowance of C-60 commandoes from Rs 1,500 per month to Rs 4,000 per month.
It may be mentioned here that after the seven C-60 commandoes made the supreme sacrifice fighting the Naxalites recently, the Home Department has started clearing proposals forwarded to it by the office of Director General of Police last year. On May 12, Home Department cleared the proposal regarding extension to Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme for Naxalites. The office of Director General of Police had sent the proposal to the Home Department on September 5, 2013.
Both the proposals -- extension to Surrender and Rehabilitation Scheme for Naxalites and increase in C-60 commandoes’ allowance -- were sent by the the office of Director General of Police to Home Department much before enforcement of Model Code of Conduct for Lok Sabha elections. Still, the proposals remained in cold storage for a long time with the Home Department.
