Gadkari launches ROMDAS vehicle to conduct road mgmt survey

* NHAI to conduct survey of 3 lakh km of road length using the advanced system

Staff Reporter
National Highway Authority of India (NHAI), made a presentation on Road Network Survey planned through a specially equipped survey vehicle, at the residence of Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways, here on Sunday. Soon after the presentation, Gadkari performed pooja of the survey vehicle to formally launch the survey.
Talking briefly to reporters on this occasion, Gadkari said that the Road Measurement Data Acquisition System (ROMDAS) for road network survey would be helpful in mapping the roads and knowing the condition of roads. Such vehicles and technique of road network survey are already in use in various countries of the world. This particular vehicle has been brought to India from New Zealand. “The survey and the well-equipped vehicle will help in curbing corruption and expediting the pace of quality development, especially in remote and inaccesible areas of Kashmir and North-East,” Gadkari said.

Chandrakant Patil, Maharashtra Public Works Minister, who was present on this occasion, said that the survey would be helpful in chalking out strategy for planned road development. Already, there has been much politics over road development, quality of roads, standard of works done etc. Advanced system will help the Government in coming up with proper policy response, Patil said.
Vikas Kumbhare, MLA; Praveen Datke, Mayor; Atul Kumar, Chief General Manager of NHAI, and others were present prominently on this occasion. Earlier, Atul Kumar made a presentation on Road Network Survey and ROMDAS-equipped vehicle here. During his presentation, Atul Kumar threw light on the technology being used and the objectives behind taking up the survey.
ROMDAS, developed by Data Collection Limited (DCL), is a system designed to collect ‘asset and pavement information’ using almost any vehicle. The system includes hardware components, odometer, interfaces and software licenses for collecting survey data. The data outputs include distance, speed, Location Reference Points, manual rating and referencing of inventory, events and road condition through user-defined key-coding, travel time surveys for assessing traffic congestion and delays, moving traffic counts, etc.

Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Surface Transport and Highways; and Chandrakant Patil, Maharashtra Minister for Public Works, and officials of NHAI are seen at the pooja of ‘Road Survey Vehicle’ at Gadkari’s residence here on Sunday.

The initiative is a part of Asset Management System launched by NHAI, in accordance with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Digital India’. The vehicle fitted with ROMDAS will have sensors and high-resolution cameras. The system will be linked with GAGAN satellite system and Global Positioning System (GPS). The project of road network survey is being implemented across the country, and it involves mapping of 3 lakh km of road length. Already, 1 lakh km of road length has been mapped and the data collected is being processed to be put up on the website of NHAI. These roads include Nagpur-Ahmedabad, Pune-Pimpalgaon, Varanasi-Nepal, Jammu-Pathankot and others. Already, the system is being used in 75 countries.
