LT GEN RR NIMBHORKAR TAKES OVER AS 16TH COLONEL OF THE PUNJAB REGIMENT

Lieutenant General RR Nimbhorkar took over the reins as a Colonel of the Punjab Regiment, the oldest Regiment of the Indian Army. He thus joins a lineage of illustrious Generals Starting from the first “Colonel” Field Marshal Earl Alexander of Tunis and has stalwarts like Lt Gen Jagjit Singh Arora, Padma Bhushan, VSM the hero of the 1971 Bangladesh war and Lt Gen SPP Thorat, Kirti Chakra Padma Shri also from the State of Maharashtra.

Lt Gen Nimbhorakar hails from Wadala a remote village in the Wardha District and belongs to a farming family. Despite its remote location the village has the distinction of being at the forefront of the freedom struggle and many a young men sacrificed their lives during the agitation in 1942. The General is an alumnus of Sainik School, Satara and National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla. He was commissioned from the Indian Military Academy into 15 PUNJAB (the erstwhile 1st Patiala state forces) in Jun 1979.
A thoroughbred combat veteran he has commanded a Battalion, Brigade and Counter Insurgency Force in highly active operational areas in some of the toughest frontiers of the nation. For his gallantry, dedication and exceptional command ability he was awarded the Sena Medal twice, Vishisht Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Meda, COAS Commendation Card and Commander-in-Chief, Strategic Force Command Commendation Card. Always at the forefront of operations he was seriously wounded during operations in the Kargil Sector while commanding his battalion for which he was conferred the Parakram Padak. He is today one of the most highly decorated serving officers in the State of Maharashtra.
The General has had a number of overseas assignments as well, he was selected to represent the UN Mission in Angola (UNAVEM-II) as a military observer. He underwent training at NESA Centre, National Defence University, Washington and Asia Pacific Centre for Security studies at Honolulu, Hawaii (USA). In 2010 he was also nominated for the prestigious National Defence Course at Mirpur, Dhaka in Bangladesh.
His family has strong martial roots with all three brothers having served/serving in the Armed Forces, continuing this unique martial tradition his daughter is also in the Indian Navy as a medical officer and is married to a Naval Officer. It is a distinction which is truly unique and rare in the State of Maharashtra. The General Officer is at present serving in the prestigious appointment of General Officer Commanding, Maharashta, Gujarat and Goa Area and shortly will move to command a corps.
