Trouble-makers, extortionists in industrial area to face action

Staff Reporter
Industrial development is closely associated with law and order. Keeping this in mind, Maharashtra Government has decided to constitute a committee to ensure that law and order is maintained in industrial areas in the State.
The decision has been taken against the backdrop of various problems faced by the investors in industrial areas across the State. One of the problems cited was that disputes led to creation of hurdles in the way of giving possession of land acquired under Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) Act. These tensions often escalated into law and order situation, especially when cops were brought in, as human rights allegations were made. This hit industrial development.
Besides, in many cases, hurdles were created if the demand of certain elements for award of contracts regarding creation of infrastructure was not heeded by investors. Even after clearing these and other hurdles, if an industry started production, ‘office-bearers of Mathadi labour unions’ created troubles in various works including transport of raw material or finished goods to and fro the production unit, observed the Government in a document. Other areas of trouble identified by the Government included problems created in the work of laying of pipelines by way of raising issue of ‘right to way’, and extortion rackets operating in industrial areas.
Any intervention in any of these problems led to law and order situation. The decision to form the committee at district level has been taken by Industries, Energy, Labour Department in accordance with a meeting held on May 13, under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. In the meeting, various issues pertaining to law and order problems in industrial areas were discussed at length. Apart from emphasis on ‘Make in Maharashtra’ initiative, efforts to enhance industrial output and development of allotted plots for industrial purposes were discussed in the meeting.
The districts having Commissionerate of Police at its district headquarters, will see the committee being headed by respective Commissioner of Police. In case of other districts, respective Superintendents of Police will head the committee. The panel will comprise Sub-Divisional Officer, General Manager of District Industries Centre (DIC), and District Labour Officer as members. Regional Officer of Maharashtra Industries Development Corporation (MIDC) will be the Member Secretary. Thus, the committee will have authorities from Police Department, Revenue Department, MIDC, and DIC.
The committee will ensure that action is taken against trouble-makers and extortionists, and also the genuine issues will be addressed properly, said an officer familiar with the development.
